It's finally come to pass. I've sold my soul to the dark side. I've bought a Mac. I found a good deal on eBay and figured cheap was a good way to dip my toes into the non-PC world. I spent some time chatting with Bruce about the specific computers we bought and he seemed very positive about what we have. I'm even thinking about getting a cheap iMac to toy around with.

Vista was what finally scared me off. I was looking at what I'd need to do if I wanted to upgrade to it and I'd have to dump a fair amount of money into the new laptop plus the cost of software. That's not even considering if we could upgrade the other laptop or the two towers I have. There's a good chance I wouldn't be able to upgrade them, since I think the Compaq tower is maxed out. I could probably buy a brand new MacBook for the cost of upgrading all our PCs. I can install Leopard, when it comes out, with no issue. The lack of viruses also is a huge plus in my book.

Plus Photoshop! How can I go wrong with something that's basically built to run Photoshop. I can also yoink software from Mum and Bruce now and they have awesome stuff.

Bleh. Other than that, nothing good is going on. I have a killer headache, probably from not eating a real lunch. I finally broke out the popcorn maker yesterday, so I made popcorn for lunch. I should probably find some Tylenol or have something with a little caffeine in it. Ugh, and I need to quit looking at iMac desktops. I don't need to spend even more money.

I've been a Mac user since the late 80s, I csn ASSURE you that you have joined the LIGHT side. Windows = evil.

Yay! I figure the next upside is that all the programmes have cool names, as well. Seriously, Panther vs. XP? Mac wins.

I probably will be taking you up on that. I'm pretty much Mac dumb, aside from using Photoshop, so I'm sure I'll have a million questions.

Actually, I already have one: do you know if an installed Airport card will work with my Belkin router?

I went with the iBook G3s that I was looking at right before you headed home last night. And I bought two of them because I have no willpower.

I've spent years being fearful of them, but my mum's been using hers with no issues (she's got a G4). I can't wait to be able to have real Photoshop to finish editting the wedding photos.

no reason why it shouldn't, though you may have to argue with them a little bit. that's an area where i'm of limited help, since i've never had to set up a net. at college, i just turn on the card and POOF! internet. it, as they say, "just works" with a mac. if you are lucky, your router will also "just work". barring that, try your network preference settings, restart the router...the usual things.

good luck using photoshop on G3s...expect it to be quite slow. though, depending on what you were using before, it might be an improvement.

Probably akin to piddling around with the network when you get a new PC. That should be within my realm of abilities. Thanks :)

I've been using it on an ancient PC, so it should be an improvement. That and the iMacs at school, so it should be on par.

once you go mac, you'll never go back.

say what you will, you just joined the LIGHT side. if you can get a computer that is at least 3 models back and expect to be able to do with it, that's Goodness. they're ridiculously easy to figure out, so I wouldn't worry about a "learning curve."

I was an avowed Mac hater, but when my HP crapped out weeks from the due date of my thesis and I was getting advice from my geek friends that involved stripping Sonys and putting in Linux, I broke down and said "I JUST WANT SOMETHING THAT WORKS!" the vote was unanimous that I should get a Mac.

personally, I am very very sad that I will have to replace my beloved iBook G4 in 2008 because the clinical program at my school is not savvy enough to get their shit together, so we're required to have a laptop that runs Windows (the current requirement is XP, but I am sure that will have changed to Vista by then. boo OSX knock-offs.) ... but they can't take my liberty... I am just going to upgrade to the macBook :)

I think there's a way you can run Windows on Macs. I originally resisted getting a Mac for that reason.

My mum loves her G4.

My stepdad checked them out when we got them and was really impressed with them, so (luckily) they're not crap.
