Since my wedding is quickly approaching, it's occured to me that I need to obtain and learn to use make effectively. I'm asking you, O Mighty FList, what would you recommend: brands, products, tips, pictures, and website. I will be eternally greatful. I'm going for kind of a 40s/glam look, if that helps.

I am very grateful in advance.

Skin issues? Preferences on foundation?

My recommendation always: http://www.bareescentuals.com/

I have sensitive skin, so this helps. I also hate foundation, and I like the natural glow look. I bought my "starter" kid three years ago. I've yet to run out. It takes me three minutes to apply.

I'm definitely going to look into that. Are they as good as All Might TV claims?

Yes. It works wonderfully. I used to have to put lotion, then foundation, then used compressed power, then blush, then .... you get the point. It would take me 20 minutes to put on my make-up. It was annoying. Worst part was that if I had gone out to party, I'd have to come home and drag my ass into the bathroom so I could wash the gunk off my face. Even after two rinses, I'd still have gunk on my face. It took me 30 minutes to take the shit off. Worst part was breaking out in zits the next morning (I've got sensitive skin). Plus, my make up was hard to deal with considering I have combination skin (oily plus dry).

I bought my kit three years ago. It came with the base colour, the blush colour, and the mineral veil which makes me look sparkly. It came with one brush. I still use the same kit, I just bought more brushes to help me out (like a smaller blush so I could use the base to hide my cat scratch scar on my forehead). My make-up routine is now like this: lotion, base, glow, mineral veil, lips gloss, lipstick, eyebrow colour. Done. 5-6 minutes tops. If I'm feeling more anal, it won't take me more than 10 minutes to do my make-up. My face feels like it's not oily when I wear it, and I don't get the weird cake lines when I smile because it's a very thin layer of colour. I don't break out. And, if I'm too tired to wash up, I'm not worried about falling asleep with make-up on. Definitely try it out. The starter kit comes with a video and explains stuff. Here's a pic of our engagement photoshoot. Can't see the scar. :) None of the pics were altared.

Most importantly, some of the blemishes (like a mole or something) still come through, which I like because it doesn't make me look like a doll. It makes me look human.

You guys are cute!

I think I may end up trying this. I'm all about make-up I could get away with not washing off and it sounds like it's really good for sensitive skin.

I never wear foundation because I have very pale skin and have a hard time finding a match. I have typical T zone issues and I do have a lot of allergies to drugstore make-ups.

I find that cover girl is not only a little less pricey then all the fancy, but it works really well and is good for those of us that are on the pastey white side of life :)

Agreed :) But if you have olive undertones (as opposed to pink ones), try Maybelline ^^ I like Cover Girl, but it's hard to find a foundation as light as I need without being pinkish.

Any specific Maybelline foundation you recommend?

I'm actually allergic to Covergirl's foundation, unfortunately. It took me all of middle school to figure it out.

i dont personally use them but i know tons that swear by them. they have a variety of types and finishes. I would go to a counter and try a bunch on if you can. its always best in person, but if not, going on the MAC comm and telling them exactly your skin type and posting a pic, they could tell you what to get.

Any recommendations on a community I could lurk in? I'm probably going to try to find a location or spec out the Sephora next time I go into the city.

Here's another vote for MAC. The only product of theirs that I don't love is the mascara. However, they have killer fake eyelashes, which is what I'm wearing at my wedding ('cause I'm a crier).

i love MAC.....everything is awesome and in the last 3 months ive spent over $100 on it. Its pricey but it lasts a long time and when u wake p at 8am and put makeup on, you can still see it perfectly at 10pm. I really cant tell u how much i love all their stuff.

How are their lipsticks for staying on?

well i use the Viva Glam 5 lipstick and the viva glam 5 lip glass and together they las a few hrs if ur not licking ur lips or smudging them togteher too much, but i think they last for a long while. There might be others that stay on better and not rub off when kissing (i think theres a covergirl brand that stays on and is very hard to get off..which can be bad too tho) but i love all their makeup

Some of the long wear ones feel funny, though. I do have a lip marker from Urban Decay that's pretty awesome.

You need to get a great red lipstick. I really however recommend you go get a free makeover from a makeup counter (some places charge, look around) and let them tell you you're colors and undertones. What you think they are might be wrong. MAC is great makeup, but if you aren't good applying it... you can look like a clown.... or extremely dramatic when you are going for understated.

www.benefit.com you can get it through www.sephora.com though. sephora has a gift set for $42 with my 3 fav products of all time...dandelion, benetint, and their mascara. urban decay is my favorite brand but benefit is a little more old skool glam.

For department store makeup I highly recomend checking out Clinique and I know they will give you a free makeover. The only thing that I don't like from them is their masacara because it doesn't stay on very well at all. I also really like Mary Kay. They have great mascara, lip gloss, lip stick, and my very favorite product is oil mattifier. You put it on the oily areas of your face before putting on your makeup and let it dry and your face will be shine free for many hours. For my wedding I wore Covergirl makeup because it was cheap and I knew the colors worked on me. I felt like I was wearing a ton of makeup (because I never wear foundation), but it looked good in the pictures.

I love Clinique's toner/face wash stuff. Also good to know about the mattifier. I used to use Jane cosmetics's one, but they quit making it for some ungodly reason. That was seriously the best stuff ever.

You might also want to ask Princessbunny and see if she will do a virtual makeover for you. She did one for me a few months ago and I love everything she picked for me, which is amazing since all she had to go on was one picture that I emailed her.
Also, with the Mary Kay stuff it is much cheaper to buy off of Ebay and you don't have to deal with an overbearing Mary Kay lady.

I think one of Dawn's cousins does Mary Kay, too. I think I may also ask princessbunny about a makeover, as well.
