Tonight was Date Night. Steven and I went to Reggio Italian Ristorante for dinner. I originally made a face over the prices, but they give you an enormous amount of food and we had a coupon from the Entertainment book for a free entree. Steven had veal saltimbocca and I had gnocci with broccoli in a pesto cream sauce. Holy jesus, did they give us a lot of food! We both brought home more than half. We definitely got our money's worth.
After that, we headed in to the city and parked in front of the Opera House. Our seats were ok-- mid-balcony-- but not as nice as Mom's, which were 4th row. The most irritating man in the world sat in front of me and get moving his head just perfectly to block my few. He and his stupid wife snuck M&Ms in and chomped on them the whole way through. I wanted to kick them hard.
We had the second understudy for Jean Valjean and he was really good. The man who played Javert (Robert Hunt) was who I saw in Jekyll & Hyde a bunch of years ago and still very good. Fantine's voice was awful. She has the worst warbling vibrato and she really wrecked The Dream I Dreamed. Eponine was strong and did a great rendition of On My Own and A Little Fall of Rain. The barricade was iffy; I've seen better. I'm ignoring Cosette because I hate her, but child Cosette was adorable and did a good job on Castle on a Cloud. Marius was middle of the road. Thenardier was rotten; you couldn't at all understand what he was singing. That sucked because I love the two of them. The wife was so-so, but not great. I was very upset about how they handled Javert's Suicide. Usually he falls through a trap door-- not here. That made me sad.
All in all, it was an ok production. Not great, but not awful, either. We still had a good time and I have a ton of gnocchi leftover.
