Atonement

We did end up making it to the theatre yesterday.

It was not at all what I expected. In fact, I am surprised it's as popular as it is, let alone being nominated for best picture. This isn't because I thought it was bad, I just found it far less mainstream than most movies I've seen recently.

I was really surprised by how almost heavy handed the symbolism was. There was the water, the (broken) vase, the lilies, the crucifixion, the foot-washing, the use of the colours just to name what I can remember off the top of my head. I'm not sure if everyone noticed that, Steven didn't, but I felt it was just smacking you in the face with O HAI, LOST VIRGINITY HERE. On the other hand, I'm betting Mum would have a field day with the movie.

But oh God, the library scene ate my brain. Whomever set that one up should be given a prize. That was just to die for.

Steven did not like it. He did like the Dunkirk scene quite a bit, though. I found it a little convoluted and some parts were hard to follow. I did find the way they showed scenes from different vantage points to be very interesting, although that was really only in the beginning.

I was expecting it to be a lot stronger and straight forward. I did order a cheap copy of the book and I'd like to see it again, but I honestly don't think it should win Best Picture. Art Direction, yes.

We went out after for Tibetan food with Sam, which was ok, but not great. I started getting the beginnings of a migraine which is still lingering today, though it's not unbearable yet. I'm hoping I slept through the worst of it. We rolled in around 4:30 in the morning.

Anyhow, I have two books coming soon and I got my replacement Baby G which I have managed not to set the unholy, chirpy alarm on. I've done nothing else this week-end, though I should do a bit of laundry so I have things to wear tomorrow. I still need to finish my hair today and repaint my nails, too.

Of course, instead, I am going to sit around and watch Evita again and be lazy for the rest of the day
