yeah, phones have gotten so damn gimmicky! i have a prepaid plan, so it's pretty easy to get away with a cheapass phone with no bells and whistles--ie, one that won't break! The last time i needed a new phone, i wasn't switching plans, so i bought a refurb. and i could have gotten just about whatever, but i read a bunch of reviews and a flipphone that was comparable to the phone i bought was reviewed much lower than the similar bar phone. the fact that wiring has to go through a joint is what they call a "bad plan". so i bought the bar phone...and i've had it over a year, dropped it everywhere, and there's not a scratch on it.
OH. of note here: if you aren't changing plans, and you are just buying the phone outright, you may be able to do what i did and buy a refurb (little known fact...). WAY cheaper than a new one, and your choices might be different. worth checking.
