This is a great question! I have no idea how to answer it. ... Off the top of my head: Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha. I understand her feelings of being trapped.
Francine from the comic book Strangers In Paradise. i've never read a story with a character that reminds me so much of myself in look and in existance. her fears in relationships mirrored mine and her best friend is so madly in love with her but she could never take that step to the other side :) it is eerie that her life has so many similaities to mine. also, the icon of her i am using here is what helped bring my husband and i together :)
That's a tough one. Hermione Granger from harry Potter is one, but then so is Inara Serra from Firefly. I also like Temperance Brennan from Bones (not from the books tho), ... I think I have elements of lots of characters that I identify with... heck, I'd even toss in some Princess Leia just for good measure. And to round it out, let's mention movie Eowyn from LOTR.
Scarlett O'Hara, unfortunately (and I'll include both GWTW and the sequel "Scarlett", as her personality evolves into something better later on). We're too alike: cunning-smart but people-stupid, don't know what we want until it's too late, absolutely selfish, always roaring about something, loyal to our Celtic roots, will do anything for the land, absolutely NO patience with people who want to fall apart instead of shutting up and DOING it (a la her whiny sisters in the cotton field), not really giving a damn what other people think and then suffering for it later, stupid and unreasoning devoted love to people who don't love her back the same way, headstrong, not considering the consequences of her actions, completely devoted to the people she chooses to love and be devoted to, gentling herself later in life... Interestingly enough, there's a fair amount of her in Elizabeth Swann as well, whom I also identify with. Liz is a better person by far, but there's a hell of a lot of similar traits, certainly.
Granted I am not (I hope to God!) nearly as bad a person as Scarlett is in her younger years, and I'd like to think I'm a damn sight smarter and certainly more erudite/ well-read/ educated/ etc, but I see a lot of similarity.
